  • No, you will not. Our emergency antibiotic kits are used for catastrophic situations when emergency help is not available. Our doctors use the utmost caution when prescribing to make sure that an allergic reaction will not happen and put you in a more dire medical emergency.

  • We ask about kidney and liver disease because it’s not that patients can’t use antibiotics if they have kidney or liver disease, it’s that they have to have their dosages adjusted based on their level of dysfunction. It’s a delicate balance and requires closer monitoring by a physician. That is why under our model of providing antibiotics we aren’t able to extend the service to patients with those kinds of chronic conditions in a way that is safe for the patient. If your doctor has told you that your kidney function is normal and you have no medication restrictions, you can answer the question to kidney disease as ‘No’.

  • It’s a question of how hot and for how long. Summer temps 80-120 degrees would have to be sustained for quite a while to have an effect. Higher temps could have more effect sooner like if they were baked in an oven or sitting in direct sunlight in really high heat.

  • We ask for a list of your daily medications to ensure that there are no contraindications(interactions) with your medications and the antibiotics.

  • When taking any medications while pregnant or trying to become pregnant it is important that you communicate with your PCP or obstetrician. The antibiotics that come in the Heads Up Medical Kits are typically safe however, there are some particular warnings against taking certain antibiotics at different trimesters. Please consult with your doctor, pharmacist, and by using the educational materials we have provided such as our Emergency Antibiotic Guidebook.

  • We only supply the emergency antibiotic kit with the different antibiotics in it. At this moment, we don’t offer an a la carte option. The antibiotics we supply provide extended protection against a variety of bacterial infections. This is so you are prepared to treat any infection that may present itself.

  • In the case of doxycycline, there has been an historical tendency to include the same warnings that are included for tetracycline. While doxycycline is part of the same family of antibiotics as tetracycline it shares some very important differences. Among those differences is that it DOES NOT degrade to any toxic components over time. In fact, this is one of the main reasons it was included in the kit. The antibiotics in your kit have been very thoughtfully put together by a panel of experts in their field. Including physicians and pharmacists.

  • Current and ongoing research suggests that if antibiotics are stored under optimal conditions and packaged correctly, they maintain 90 percent of their potency for many years. Pharmaceutical-grade manufactured Mylar bags that are FDA and USDA approved offer a safe and effective storage choice for medical and pharmaceutical items, including antibiotics. Vacuum sealed for airtight optimization and made from thick but flexible laminated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) layers; they offer an extremely low Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR).

An oxygen-rich environment can destroy pharmaceuticals via oxidation and gradually degrade the effectiveness of the drugs stored inside. When correctly used, Mylar bags supply high-barrier protection against the effects of oxygen, moisture, and light. They have many beneficial properties which extend and preserve the shelf-life and potency of antibiotics- offering high-puncture resistance- although protection against rodents or critters who can chew through the material cannot be guaranteed. They come in assorted sizes, between 1 MIL and 7 MIL; theoretically, the thicker the bag, the more protection it can offer. When used with oxygen absorbers, preservation times depend upon several factors. Antibiotics can be safely preserved for 10 to 30 years if sealed correctly and stored in adequate atmospheric conditions.

Healthcare distributors and manufacturers increasingly turn to oxygen absorbers, also known as oxygen scavengers, to preserve medicine against oxidative degradation. Oxygen absorbers should be FDA-approved and made with paper and polyethylene packaging. If manufactured to certified quality standards, they are safe to use with antibiotics. They offer a non-toxic method of absorbing oxygen when designed with GRAS (generally regarded as safe) packaging materials to prevent direct contact with the pharmaceutical product.

The combination of vacuum-sealed Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers is a practical form of protection against oxidative degradation and is essential to preserving the self-life and potency of antibiotics. When adhering to manufacturer guidelines on usage and storage, this method removes up to 99.99 percent of oxygen levels in the surrounding atmosphere. They come in packets typically one inch by one inch and contain elemental iron granules. If split open, noticeable when a dark brown or rust-coloured material is visible, the iron can become toxic and pose an elevated risk to both drug and user. Subsequently, storing the bags in a cool, dark, and dry location is recommended. Keep the bags in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic buckets at an optimum temperature and away from any light source for extra protection. Additionally, using too few oxygen absorbers will not ensure adequate oxidation; therefore, it is advisable to use as many that will fit into the bag because too many will not be harmful.

Amoxicillin-Clavulanate, Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, and Metronidazole are dispensed in capsule, tablet, cream, gel, or liquid form, and each product will have a different shelf life. An antibiotic in liquid form will come as granules to dissolve in a special liquid provided. These granules will expire after two weeks if mixed with water. Oxygen absorbers should never be used in Mylar bags to preserve antibiotic forms that contain more than 10 percent moisture. This type of storage can increase the risk of botulism poisoning. Solid and completely dry dosage forms of antibiotics such as tablets and capsules are sensitive to atmospheric conditions.

  • Antibiotic expiration dates indicate the final day that a particular manufacturer can guarantee the potency and safety of a specific medication. Current expiration dates are considered an acceptable time frame.

    • Amoxicillin-Clavulanate- A penicillin antibiotic used in adults and children to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and infections of the skin, throat, ears, lungs, and sinuses. Amoxicillin-Clavulanate is not toxic but may be less effective in treating infection beyond it’s expiration date.
    • Azithromycin- A macrolide antibiotic used in adults and children to treat bronchitis, pneumonia, Lyme disease, some sexually transmitted infections, and infections of the skin, throat, ears, lungs, sinuses, and reproductive organs. Azithromycin is not toxic but may be less effective in treating infection beyond it’s expiration date.
    • Ciprofloxacin- A fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in adults and children from the age of one when other antibiotics have not worked and used to treat severe skin and bone infections, chest infections, sexually transmitted infections, conjunctivitis, and ear infections. Ciprofloxacin is not toxic but may be less effective in treating infection beyond it’s expiration date.
    • Doxycycline- A tetracycline antibiotic used in adults and children over 12 years old and used to treat skin infections, sexually transmitted infections, chest and dental infections, and other rare infections. Doxycycline is not toxic but may be less effective in treating infection beyond it’s expiration date.
    • Metronidazole- A nitroimidazole antibiotic used in adults and children to treat skin infections, gum disease, dental abscesses, bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and various skin infections. Metronidazole is not toxic but may be less effective in treating infection beyond it’s expiration date.

Important Note: Heads Up Medical advises that all medications only be used within their posted expiration dates.

  • We leave it up to the consulting physician to make a substitution if there are allergies. There is almost always a substitution that can be made. You MUST notate any allergies on your submission form. We cannot make substitutions once the order is placed.

  • All medications carry risks in their use. Heads Up Medical’s antibiotics were selected for their effectiveness while optimizing patient safety.
